St. Matthews By-The-Sea is named for this faithful disciple whose life was changed after he encountered Jesus Christ.  Located one block from the ocean and in the middle of the resort community of Fenwick Island, DE, SMBTS continues to assist all people in finding new life in Christ.

Our friendly and caring congregation is composed of people of varying religious backgrounds who have come from various locales in the Mid-Atlantic region to make their homes at the beach.  Our worship services blend the traditional with the contemporary in such a way that Jesus is lifted up and spirits are uplifted. But at St. Matthews By-The-Sea, worship provides a springboard for service. Our forty-six ministries, programs and organizations reach out to address community needs and also offer opportunities for spiritual growth to members of our faith community. Bible studies and other Christian education programs offer answers to the questions posed by post-modern life. Whether you are planning to spend a week at the seashore or dig your toes into the sand and live here for a while, we invite you to visit us at St. Matthews By-The-Sea. Come as a stranger. Leave as a friend.

LENTEN BIBLE STUDY
News added: 2010-01-31

"Parables and Passion" John Indermark - Jesus' Stories for the Days of Lent Discover new insights about Christ's passion through the lenses of His parables. "Parables nudge us all to receptive insight," writes Indermark. "For those new to the Lenten journey, they give access to the holy through the oridinary. For those who have navigtated this season many times, they allow an opportunity to experience Lent from a different perspective." Lent offers a time to reflect on how we live compared with God's expectations. Our best example is to study how Jesus lived and taught in the presence of God. Open your eyes and spirit to the sacred in the ordinary moments and people of your life. As the parables prove, when we fail to see the holy in life, we may lose sight of the sacredness of life. What better lesson to reinforce during the Lenten season! Join us for this 6 session study that offers scripture, exploration of bibilical witness, prayer and reflection on action need in your life. Six-sessions on Friday evenings at 6:30 pm beginning Feb.26 $12.00 per study book payable at first class.

The Administrative Council will meet after the service next week on February 14.

We've started a MAGAZINE EXCHANGE in the church library which is located in the Meeting Room next to the church office. When you've finished reading your favorite magazine, put it in the brown basket and take one from it. Enjoy!

The Prayer Group gathers faithfully every Monday morning at 9:00am in the Baker Parlor. It's a special time. You are invited to join them.

The Crafts Group is not for women only! We need new people - including men - with new ideas! If you can follow directions, you can be good (great even) at our Crafts Group which meets on Tuesdays at 9:00am. One more thing: we are looking for someone to be the chairperson for the May 8 Yard Sale. Call the church office to volunteer.

All women are invited to the February 9 UMW unit meeting in Clendaniel Hall at 12:30pm. The program entitled "A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial: Property Makes Mission Possible", highlights specific mission institutions that were the recipients of the last offering given to building improvement and capital campaigns. Offering envelopes and prayer cards will be provided.

Those women making shawls for the UMW Assembly 2010 "Call for Prayer Shawls" are reminded that we need the shawls by Sunday, February 14. Call Jacquie Christman (537-2766) if you have any questions.

You are cordially invited to the Checkerboard Valentine's Ball on Sunday, February 14 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm in Clendaniel Hall. Dress up if you like and join the Checkerboard family for a time of music, food, and fun. RSVP to Vicki Daisey (410-352-5813). Admisssion is a hug and smile.

Our Single Seniors will meet in Clendaniel Hall on Friday, February 19 at noon for a Pot Luck Luncheon. We are having a "Household Products Shower" for the Sussex Community Crisis Housing Services. Need more info? Call Velma Sanford at 539-2076.

Each day will feature a different art form- instrumental music, choral music, the fine arts, drama, etc. --that will help us express our joy over the eternal life that awaits us because of Christ's resurrection. We need help in planning this six day celebration. If you're feeling creative, plese contact Rev. Miller.
