“A Story to Tell”

“Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God.”
Philippians 1:3

I recently saw a post that the “Town of Fenwick Island – Government” made online and it was part of a series they are doing called “Old Fenwick Series.” It was a picture of cottage (see below) at a place called Sound Camp; this would have been located just south of the lighthouse on what is now modern day 141st street and Ocean Hwy.  The picture below is a building that was
part of the old tent meetings that Sound Church sponsored from the 1890’s until around 1916.

These tent meetings remind me of Carey’s Camp outside of Millsboro.  If you have never been, they still meet each summer for 10 days or so.  Each evening, there is music and a speaker in the outdoor tabernacle while dozens of “tents” “(like the picture above) surround the tabernacle.  There is a lot of tradition tied into these old camp meetings and they are certainly a part of our Methodist tradition!  I wonder how similar these tent meetings in Fenwick were compared to Millsboro?  Regardless, it’s a reminder of the generations and people who have “gone before us” and paved the way.  Not only are pictures like this interesting to me from a historical perspective,
but it also reminds me of the stories of others who have gone on to eternal happiness with God.  Perhaps this reminds of why I enjoy talking about the Saints of the church each November.

It can be impactful when we take time to think about all those Christians who have gone before us, lived their lives, lived out their faith, etc.  It can also be impactful to remember the Christians who are currently among us and in community with us now; let us encourage one another, and show the love of Christ to one another.  Finally, it is also important to remember the Christians that will come after us after we are all in eternity one day.  How can we live in such a way that we pave the way for the next generation to come along to continue to work that God is doing in the Fenwick Island area and beyond?  Be reminded today that we are surrounded by such a great
cloud of witnesses and that we all have this present moment to be the love of Christ in the world!

Amen.

Jake
