“Thirsting for God”
“As a deer longs for flowing streams, so my soul longs for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God,
for the living God…” Psalm 42:1-2
When I had a major debulking surgery in 2010 to remove some of the growth on my back, I can remember very vividly how thirsty I was after the operation! For quite a while, I could only have ice chips; many of you have experienced this type of thirst as well. In the midst of my thirst, I had a dream of a boat sailing on the cleanest of drinking water. Further, the boat had massive sails with the Sprite logo on them. It was like a big tease of a dream because I was so thirsty! I chuckle looking back at this now, but I can still remember how satisfying it was to drink that first cup of water when I was permitted to do so.
I thought about that story as I was reading Psalm 42 this week. Sometimes scripture can spark our memories and personal experiences. Anyway, we have this beautiful image of a deer longing for flowing streams and how the Psalmist says their soul longs for God like that. In addition, we also see that the Psalmist has a soul that thirsts for God. It made me stop and reflect on my own desire to have God in my life. How often am I “thirsty” for God’s presence in my life like I was for that cup of water after my surgery? There are many things in this world that can temporarily satisfy our thirst, but we will be thirsty again. Jesus offers us living water (John 4:13-14). May you and I thirst for the Living Water each and every day of our lives as we continue to live as disciples of Jesus Christ.
